Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

And Page Rank Lessons

The Complete Guide

In previous I showed you different optimization strategies. You learned the difference between offpage search engine optimization and onpage search engine optimization.

Lets Review:

Onpage search engine optimization are the things that you change on your webpage.

  • The Title tag

  • The Header tags

  • Bolding, Italicizing, Underlining

  • The Alt image tags

  • The Meta Tags

  • and so on...

Offpage search engine optimization comes down to this:

Which websites are linking to your wesbite and how they're doing it.

These things include:

  • The Anchor text used where your link is found

  • The title of the page where your link is found

  • The rank of the page where your link is found

  • The theme of the website where your link is found

  • The age of the website linking to your site

  • And so on where your link is found

I am you see that it is the offpage search engine optimization that will get your website to the top of the search engines. It is not the onpage optimization factors like bolding text. The onpage optimization is something you SHOULD do, but that is not nearly as important as offpage optimization.

Here is why:

Lesson 3

"In this lesson we will analyze a website"

We are going tp analyze the #1 ranked website on Google when we do a search for: "click here".

First, we will go to Google and type in: "click here".

Click Rank

We see that the #1 ranked website is www.adobe.com.

Why would adobe.com rank #1 for that search term? I might expect adobe.com to rank well for:

  • Graphic Programs

  • Printable Documents

  • Design programs

  • Any keywords related to their software

There are somethings you should notice in the picture above.

If we looks at the Google listing, you'll notice that:

Click Rank 2

1. The word "click here" is not in the page title
2. The word "click here" is not in the URL of the site.
3. The word "click here" is not in the Google description.

Now, let's click on the listing in Google and check out the actual webpage.

Abobe Rank

The words "click here" aren't even on the webpage, anywhere!

If you listen to the onpage optimization techniques taught by many SEO companies, then shouldn't a different website rank #1 for this term?

Onpage optimization like:

  • keyword density

  • keyword prominence

  • keyword proximity

  • bolding, italicizing, underlining

  • And so on.

These are NOT critical when trying to rank well for a search term.

You should spinkle your keyword throughout the webpage and do the other onpage optimization techniques you have learned in previous lessons.

The important thing to remember is:

It is the offpage optimization that will increase your rankings in the search engines; specifically Google, Yahoo, and MSN.

Why Does ADOBE.COM rank #1 for the search: "click here"

We will open up SEO Elite to find the answer:

SEO Adobe

After it is finished running, we will click the "report view" tab to see the results.

The thing you should notice is the Google page rank of the pages linked to adobe.com. If you click the column heading in SEO Elite called "Google PR", the column will sort in descending order.

Now you see that the pages linked to adobe.com have a very high Page Rank. A website with a Page Rank of 6 or higher are high page ranks. Do you see all the PR8 websites linking to them?

Page Rank 8

You will notice many websites with a .edu or a .gov extension linking to adobe.com. Google and other engines give more weight to websites with links from .edu or .gov extensions. If you can get one of those websites to link to your website, it will REALLY improve your ranking.

Rank Analyze

Now we will click the "analysis view" tab.

When we click the column titled "anchor text", it will sort the column in descending order. We see that the words "click" and "here" are within the top 10 words listed in the left column.

The anchor text column will show you the number of times the word in the "Word" column appears in the anchor text of the link pointed at adobe.com

Rank Analyze2

When we look at the analysis above, we see that the word "click" appeared in six of the links pointed atadobe.com and 4.5% of the total links pointed at adobe.com contained the keyword "click". The keyword "here" was found in 11 links pointed at adobe.com and appeared 8.3% of the time.

Now we will go to Google and enter different combinations of words listed in the top of the screenshot above. Words like "reader, adobe, acrobat, and download". So, you'd go to Google and enter things like:

  • Adobe Reader

  • Acrobat Reader

  • Download Adobe

  • Download Reader

Checking out what webstie appears #1. Checking the links and the anchor text being used in those links, that help a website to rank highly.

The reason ADOBE.COM rank #1

The reason that adobe.com ranked #1 for the keyword "click here" are:

  1. The websites linking to adobe.com are very very good (they have a high Page Rank and are authority websites like .edu and .gov websites)

  2. The websites linked to adobe.com use the keywords "click" and "here" many times in the anchor text of the links linking to adobe.com

There are some other offpage optimization factors that helped adobe.com rank #1, but these were the main two reasons. After reading this lesson you can see the power of offpage optimization which is linking.

What is more important? The proper keyword density, the proper keyword prominence, the proper number of times you need to bold, italicize, or underline a keyword on your page? You must remeber that onpage optimization is not critical for a high page rank. Offpage optimization, linking, is what is most important.
