Page Rank And Page Optimization Lessons.

"Optimize The Wrong Keywords And You'll Likely Never Have Good Page Rank And Never See Results"

This is lesson one of the seven lesson quick start guide to complete search engine domination through "Page Rank" and "Page Optimization". The lessons in this guide is the similar to the lessons in the complete guide found on the home page of this site. If you want to be successful you must read all seven lessons. It is not enough to just read you must put everything that you learn into action. When you have finished these quick start lessons you should read the complete guide found on the home page of this site.

Quick Start Lesson 1

When I first began online, I created a brand new website, submitted it to a few search engines and I hoped that people would mysteriously show up at my site and buy what I was selling. Does this sound like you?

A few weeks go by and only a few people show up at your website. Then you try and to optimize your website around your main keywords You hope that you rank well for those key words in one of the search engines. More weeks go by and still no visitors and no money. What a waste of time.

Now your ready to give up and maybe you decide to build another website around a different market or maybe you lose hope and quit. You may have found out by now, this is not the way things are supposed to be done. You can't just create a bunch of websites and think that people will just show up at your website ready to buy your product.

You could do that in the late 90s, but that does not work anymore. You probably realize that by now if you want to have a successful website you need to have a high page rank with good page optimization.

When creating a new website this is what your first steps should be

I don't just teach theories in these lessons. I learn best with picture examples because I am a visual person. That is why I give real life examples and use screenshot pictures. If you're a visual person, you will get a lot out of these lessons.

In this lesson we will create a website related to weight loss  . We need to do a little keyword research before we start creating and collecting content for our website. Do not skipthis is very important step. We need to visit a few websites first to do our keyword research.

The first website should be:  www.goodkeywords.com

Thier keyword tool is very good and it's free.

Downloaded the software. Next enter a generic keyword related to your website into the software. In this lesson, our keywords are weight loss.

In the screenshot below you can see that Good Keywords returned a list of related terms. The count column shows us how many times the keywords were searched for in the previous month in the Overture.com search engine. To get a general estimate of the number of times those keywords have been searched on Google in the previous month you can multiply that number by 8

KEY WORD OPTIMIZATION

As you can see, during the previous month, the keyword weight loss was searched 817,038 times.

DO NOT start off by optimizing for the keyword "weight loss"

Why not optimize weight loss? Because it will be very very hard to out rank the competition for a keyword that is searched that many times in Overture.

Think about it. The competition is so huge and the keywords weight loss are not very targeted anyway. Someone could just be looking for free information on weight loss when they use those keywords in thier search. The definition of weight loss is what they may be looking for. It is is hard to know what they were looking for. Maybe they are not even looking for anything specifically about losing weight.

This is not something you should try to take on. For a brand new website, or one you're just beginning to optimize, it's better to select more specific "long tail" keyword phrases. I'll talk about this a bit later.

Now we will go to Google to find out how many websites are competing for this keyword.

GOOGLE OPTIMIZATION

There is over 66 million other websites competing for this key word. You should not start off going after that kind of competion. This too high a goal to start off with.

It is best to start off with keywords that have less competition. You will be able to target super high traffic, targeted, keywords, by the end of this quick start course. Start by getting some traffic with those keywords. As your website gets older and time passes you will build some authority in the search engines. Then you can focus the larger keywords to optimizing for.

Which keywords do we want to target?

We can find some more specific keyword phrases as we scroll down. Keyword phrases like: weight loss picture, weight loss story, free weight loss plan, and safe weight loss.

WORD RANK

In the early stage of our website these are the keywords we could target.

Now we need to go to Google and check out the competition to see exactly how hard it will be to optimize for our 3 or 4 keywords.

Some people say onpage optimization is not as important as it used to be. That is true but it is important to look at onpage Top SEO Rank optimization factors to see if your competition knows what they're doing when they optimize their websites.

Their offpage optimization will probably be good, if they have good onpage optimization. These steps are a quick way to see if a market is competitive before you jump in. If that did not make sense and your new to SEO Rank just forget about it. It is not important right now.

Weight loss story is the keywords we will start with

The #1 ranked website for weight loss story is:

http://www.runwalkjog.com/weight_loss_success_story.htm This is not a top level webpage.

Meaning it's not simply http://www.runwalkjog.com/'

(rankings can change in the search engines, so if this site is no longer ranked #1 when you view this yourself, chances are their competition has optimized their site better, and passed them up.)

PAGE RANK

We have an immediate advantage if a website's subpage has a Top SEO Rank in Google. Because we can choose to target the same keywords on our homepage (i.e. www.domain.com). It's easier to rank well for your homepage than any other webpage on your website. I will go into more detail and tell you why latter.

As you can see this website has a Google Page Rank of 5.

GOOGLE PAGE RANK

Page Rank is a page value that Google uses to rate how popular a website is. The number of votes other websites cast for your website is the basis of the Google Page Rank.  When another website places a link on their website and it is pointing to your website that counts as a vote. The more links you have pointing to your website (votes), the higher Page Rank you will have. Page Rank the main thing that Google uses to rank a website.
If you want to know your Google Page Rank, and the page rank of ant site, you need to get the Google Toolbar. Click this link to get the Google Toolbar: http://toolbar.google.com/

The good news is that the number one ranked website for this keyword only has a Page Rank of 5.  because it sould not be too hard for us to get a Page Rank of 5. The  way to increase our website's Page Rank is by getting other websites to link to us. Later you will learn the right way to get hundreds of links to your website in just a few days. I will teach you more about Page Rank later on.

View The Source Code

Now we click view, then source in our web browser to see the source code of this website as shown below:

The html code that was used to build the web page is the source code. You don't need to know the programming language(html) that was used to build the websites. But you do need to know some things to look for in the source code.

OPTIMIZATION

Clicking source opens up a text file. In that text file we can see if this website is using onpage optimization in their website.

Most highly ranked web pages contain two types of optimization. Onpage and offpage optimization. In future lessons we will learn about offpage optimization.

We will look for a few things in the source code of this website.

Click the edit button in notepad, and then select find to see if the website is using any of the tags mentioned below.

OPTIMIZATION TAGS

Now enter the tag you're looking for. Here is an example: In the first bullet below, we want to find a h1 header tag. The code for a h1 header tag is <h1>, so we enter <h1> into the find textbox and then click search. Notepad will find it and highlight it if the tag is in the source code. If it's not in the source code note pad will say it is not found. It is just that easy.

  • We are looking to see if they are using <h1> header tags and are placing the keywords weight loss story in those tags. Now we do a search for the tag and the text. We find that they did not use <h1> header tags with the text weight loss story. This is good for us.

  • We are looking to see if they are using the main keyword in the <title> tags of the website. They did do that and it is one of the main reasons they ranked highly for weight loss stories. There title is Weight Loss story stories and they have used this html code:

    <title>Weight Loss story stories</title>

The <title> tag is the text that appears at the top of the browser window as you can see here below:

    OPTIMIZATION TITLE

  • We are looking to see if they have bolded, underlined, or italicized the words weight loss story  in the content body of the webpage. They have done that. They bolded the keywords weight loss stories four times in the content of the webpage.

Now we have learned that we can bold some of the keywords in the content of our webpage. I said they have bolded weight loss stories four times, instead of saying weight loss story (singular). You should look for the plural and singular form of the keywords. The search engines view them as almost the same word.

The html tag for bold is <b>. For italics is <i>. For underlined is <u>. Below you'll see that I did a quick search for the <b> tag and found that they're using bold tags that include their keyword, "weight loss stories". It says weight loss success stories. This does include all of the words weight, loss, and stories in the bold tags.

    BOLD OPTIMIZATION

  • We are looking to see if they are using <alt> image tags. We want to see if they are placing the keywords weight loss stories in that tag. They are not using any image tags. That means this is something we should do when optimizing our website. Another thing we can do is to add images that are named after our main keywords. Here is an example: We could insert an image and name it weight loss stories1.jpg.

  • The last thing we are looking for is to see if they have put the keyword once near the top of the web page, and once near the bottom of the web page. Yes they did placed it near the top and also at the bottom. We will do this also.

We should now know how to Out Rank this #1 Ranked Website

We found out some things when we analyzed their website.

Here are the reasons we can out rank them:

  • The website is not using a <h1> header tag with the keywords weight loss stories in it.

  • The website did not use <alt> image tags with the keywords weight loss stories in them.

  • The website has a page rank of 5. A page rank of 5 can be beaten. We can have a page rank of 5 or more with a bit of work,  I will teach you how to do this in later lessons.

  • This is subpage that this website is ranked for. The sub page weight_loss_success_story.htm. If we optimize our index page for this keyword, we can get more websites to link to our website. That will get us more quality links than this website.

To get a top SEO rank on Google. The idea is to analyze the top ranked websites and do the things that they are doing. Do it better than they do to get a higher ranking.

You should use the same steps for the other keywords we have found. Analyze the top 5 ranked websites for each keyword. If the top 5 websites for your keyword have a Google Page Rank of 6 or higher, it is not a good idea to shoot for that keyword until you have built up authority by ranking well for the longer keyword phrases that have less competition.

Earlier I mentioned that keyword research was very important in building traffic. Here are the links to some special software I use to help me optimize my pages to get good page rank:
